Explore the Victorian Charm of Jamaica Plain’s Historic Sumner Hill

Jamaica Plain’s Sumner Hill neighborhood is one of 3 local historic districts and includes dozens of well-preserved wood frame homes constructed in the late 1800s by some of Boston’s most accomplished architects. Bordered by the Southwest Corridor Park, and Centre Street's business district, the area includes outstanding examples of Victorian, Colonial, Stick, Shingle, Italianate, and Queen Anne style architecture.

Known for its charming tree-lined residential streets, Sumner Hill has retained much of its architectural character. Originally part of the Greenough estate, the property was subdivided and sold to speculators to satisfy the increased demand for housing. Today all that remains of the original estate is the historic Loring Greenough House, a fine example of Colonial architecture with spacious lawns and historic gardens. A focal point of the JP community, you'll find neighbors enjoying tours, movies, concerts and summer fun.

Notable Sumner Hill Homes

  • The Loring-Greenough house was owned by the Greenough family from 1783 until 1924 and is the last surviving 18th century residence on Sumner Hill.
  • The shingle style homes along Greenough Place were designed by noted Boston architect, William Ralph Emerson, cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
  • Eugene Foss industrialist and the 45th Governor of Massachusetts lived at 7 Revere Street.
  • James Durmmond Dole, lived at 14 Roanoke Street before he became “The Pineapple King '' who pioneered the growing, canning and marketing of Hawaiian pineapples.
